Of Terms
DENIZEN
A person who simply exists in or frequents a particular place. I use this term in its noun form in direct contrast to a citizen.
HOMO SACER
Latin for ‘the accursed man’, a figure under Roman law who was excluded from political society and could be killed by anyone but could not be sacrificed in a religious ritual.
BIOPOLITICS
The intersection of human biology and politics, concerned with governance over life.
NEOLIBERALISM
A paradigm of political economy which prioritises the market and minimises the State. As a consequence, it also encourages ideologies like individualism and meritocracy.
MERITOCRACY
A political ideology in which the system operates according to merit and is run based on achievement.
INSTITUTIONAL RACISM
Refers to the way in which racism (specifically white supremacy) is encoded into the very systems on which society operates.
INTERGENERATIONAL POVERTY
When a family is stuck in poverty generation after the next. The same way children born to rich parents will inherit their wealth and also be rich, a child born to poor parents will likely inherit their poverty.
